More on B&GC - NCM
Kids and kids alone are the focus of the 146-year-old Boys and Girls Club of America movement. The movement has developed proven programs for young people in special areas of character development, educational enhancement, and career exploration and plays an active role in guiding local clubs to meet high standards of excellence.
The Boys & Girls Club of North Central Massachusetts (B&GC-NCM) was started in 2001 by a committed board of community leaders, dedicated to providing “a positive place for kids.” Club membership rapidly out grew temporary clubhouses in Fitchburg and Leominster, which were merged in 2008 into a larger centrally located site on the border of the two cities with easy access for the entire region from Route 2. There, on 15 acres of its own, amid the 164 plus park-like acres of the Trustees of the Reservation’s Doyle Conservation Center, the club now offers year-round, after-school programs, including a Teen Center open to 8 p.m. and unique environmental and science programs, to over 500 young people from ages 8 to 18.
Our clubhouse is situated on a former private school on conservation land. It is a unique site for a B&GC clubhouse that focuses on urban kids. The club includes numerous class rooms, meeting places, a full gymnasium, the Bruce Lawrence Teen Center and plenty of outdoor play and study areas. One of our emerging strengths is the development of environment-based science programs in conjunction with area schools and the adjacent Trustees of the Reservation conservation center.
